Hardcover: 64 pages

Language: English
ISBN-10: 0794500307, DJVU | 7.9 MB

This book is great! Each page is loaded with with colorful pictures and familiar objects from the house, outside, inside stores, animals, etc. Obviously it is essential to have a fluent speaker to get the proper pronunciation for each word, but the transliterations are intuitive enough to be close.

My son is almost 3 and he loves looking through the book while I teach him how to say the objects in Arabic and English. Its a good way for me to spend time with him while trying to stay in "Arabic-learning" mode since I don't know all of the objects contained in this book yet.

Formal Spoken ARABIC: Basic Course with Mp3 Files

Publisher: Georgetown University Press; 2 Pap/MP3/ edition
Date : November 30, 2005
Language: English, 365 pages
ISBN-10: 1589010604, MP3 | 56-128 kbit / sec | 168 Mb

This new edition, updated and with additional exercises, equips those who work, travel, and study in Arab countries with an educated form of spoken Arabic that functions flexibly in the face of various regional colloquial variants in the Arab world. Because the Arabic language has a number of very different spoken vernaculars, being able to speak and be understood in all Arab countries has become a challenge for English speakers.

Ryding and Mehall have designed a course that teaches a standardized variant of spoken Arabic that is close to, but more natural than, the literary Modern Standard Arabic. With a nongrammar-based approach, this book fosters communicative competence in Arabic on all levels and develops speaking proficiency without abandoning Arabic script.

It has proven to be clear, effective, and relevant to the needs of Americans living and working in the Arab East. Task-based lessons feature basic dialogues between Americans and Arabs; explanations of new structures, vocabulary expansion, and exercises; and provide gradual access to the sounds and script of Arabic by emphasizing listening and reading comprehension first, then slowly adding oral exercises and activities until the student has achieved basic proficiency.

Not intended for self-instruction for beginners, Formal Spoken Arabic Basic Course with MP3 Files assumes some previous knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic, Arabic script and phonology, and previous or simultaneous instruction in orthography.

This new edition includes a CD of MP3 audio exercises that are keyed to the text and drill students on listening and speaking. Lessons cover topics including: Heads of State Cities and Countries Official Titles Geography Systems of Government Lost Luggage Getting Acquainted Establishing Common Ground Seeking and Giving Information Personal Needs and Family Handling Problems Eating Out Bargaining and Buying

Publisher: Dar Al-fikr Date: 1986-01-01

Pages: 176, Publication Date: 1998-01-08
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0192853341, Searchable PDF
Maintains pagination from original book , 2.41mb

Description:
Islam features widely in the news, often in its most militant versions. But few people in the non-Muslim world really understand the nature of Islam, both as Ideology and religion. Islam: A Very Short Introduction offers essential insight into the structure and beliefs of this major world religion.

Malise Ruthven answers fundamental questions about the nature and scope of Islam such as why the greatest Jihad (holy war) is now against the enemies of Islam, rather than the struggle against evil, why Islam has such major divisions between movements such as the Shiis, the Sunnis, and the Wahhabis, and how the Sharia (Islamic law) has become such an important aspect of Islamic life.

In addition, he prompts further questioning into the ideas of Islamic resurgence as both an old and new concept, whether or not women can find fulfillment and equality within an Islamic framework, and the sort of problems facing Islam and its confrontations with the modern world. Offering fresh insights and new information, Islam: A Very Short Introduction provides a much needed discussion of Islam's past, present, and future, and its place in modern world religions.

PDF Html For Islam: A Mosaic, Not a Monolith

By Vartan Gregorian
Publisher: Brookings Institution Press
Pages: 164, Publication Date: 2004-08
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 081573283X, zipped PDFs in HTML 5,3 mb

Description: After World War II, leading western powers focused their attention on fighting the "Red Menace," Communism. Today, as terrorist activity is increasingly linked to militant Islamism, some politicians and scholars fear a "Green Menace," a Pan-Islamic totalitarian movement fueled by monolithic religious ideology.

Such fears have no foundation in history, according to Vartan Gregorian. In this succinct, powerful survey of Islam, Gregorian focuses on Muslim diversity and division, portraying the faith and its people as a mosaic, not a monolith.

The book begins with an accessible overview of Islam's tenets, institutions, evolution, and historical role. Gregorian traces its origins and fundamental principles, from Muhammad's call to faith nearly 1,400 years ago to the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in World War I, and the subsequent abolition of the Caliphate. He focuses particular attention on the intense struggle between modernists and traditionalists, interaction between religion and nationalism, and key developments that have caused bitter divisions among Muslim nations and states: the partitions of Palestine, the break up and Islamization of Pakistan, the 1978 revolution in Iran, and the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

Today Islamist views range across the entire spectra of religious and political thought, and Islamism is anything but a unified movement. While religious extremists have attempted to form a confederacy of like-minded radicals in many countries, much of the Muslim population lives in relatively modern, secular states. Gregorian urges Westerners to distinguish between activist Islamist parties, which promote--sometimes violently--Islam as an ideology in a theocratic state, and Islamic parties, whose traditional members want their secular political systems to co-exist with the moral principles of their religion.

Gregorian emphasizes the importance of religion in today's world and urges states, societies, and intellectuals to intervene in order to prevent Islam--as well as other religions--from becoming the political tool of various parties and states. He recommends continuing dialogues between modernist and traditionalist Muslims, as well as among the educated, secular elite and their clerical counterparts. He also urges U.S.-led efforts to engage and better understand the diversity of Muslim communities in the United States and the world.

Lamenting widespread U.S. ignorance of the world's fastest-growing religion, Gregorian calls on "enlightened citizens" to promote international understanding, tolerance, and peace.

By M.J Akbar, M.J. Akbar
Publisher: Routledge, Pages: 192
Publication Date: 2002-06-15
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0415284708
ZIPed PDF ebook, 1.7 mb  high quality, with bookmarks

Description : In The Shade of Swords--the first cohesive history of Jihad - Akbar considers how Jihad's origins lie in the earliest consciousness of Muslims, as witnessed in the miraculous victory of the Prophet's outnumbered troops at Badr.

From Muhammed to the Assassins, and from the collapse of the Moghul and Ottoman empires to the modern struggle for Palestine, Akbar's story explains how Jihad thrives on complex and shifting notions of persecution, victory and sacrifice, and how Muslims themselves have historically tried both to direct and to control the phenomenon of Jihad.

The power of Jihad, and thus of the Taliban today, pervades the mind and soul of Islam. Its plural meaning as simultaneous mass and private sentiment is its true strength and significance.

PDF | The Great Theft: Wrestling Islam from the Extremists

By Khaled M. Abou El Fadl
Publisher: HarperOne
Pages: 320, Publication Date: 2005-10-01
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0060563397, file size: RAR/PDF 5 MB / 8 MB

Description:
Despite President George W. Bush's assurances that Islam is a peaceful religion and that all good Muslims hunger for democracy, confusion persists and far too many Westerners remain convinced that Muslims and terrorists are synonymous.

In the aftermath of the attacks of 9/11, the subsequent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the recent bombings in London, an unprecedented amount of attention has been directed toward Islam and the Muslim world. Yet, even with this increased scrutiny, most of the public discourse regarding Islam revolves around the actions of extremist factions such as the Wahhabis and al-Qa'ida. But what of the Islam we don't hear about?

As the second-largest and fastest-growing religion in the world, Islam is deemed by more than a billion Muslims to be a source of serenity and spiritual peace, and a touchstone for moral and ethical guidance. While extremists have an impact upon the religion that is wildly disproportionate to their numbers, moderates constitute the majority of Muslims worldwide. It is this rift between the quiet voice of the moderates and the deafening statements of the extremists that threatens the future of the faith.

In The Great Theft, Khaled Abou El Fadl, one of the world's preeminent Islamic scholars, argues that Islam is currently passing through a transformative period no less dramatic than the movements that swept through Europe during the Reformation. At this critical juncture there are two completely opposed worldviews within Islam competing to define this great world religion. The stakes have never been higher, and the future of the Muslim world hangs in the balance.

Drawing on the rich tradition of Islamic history and law, The Great Theft is an impassioned defense of Islam against the encroaching power of the extremists. As an accomplished Islamic jurist, Abou El Fadl roots his arguments in long-standing historical legal debates and delineates point by point the beliefs and practices of moderate Muslims, distinguishing these tenets from the corrupting influences of the extremists.

From the role of women in Islam to the nature of jihad, from democracy and human rights to terrorism and warfare, Abou El Fadl builds a vital vision for a moderate Islam. At long last, the great majority of Muslims who oppose extremism have a desperately needed voice to help reclaim Islam's great moral tradition.

PDF For The Complete Idiot's Guide to Understanding Islam

by: Yahiya Emerick
Publisher: Alpha
Pages: 408, Publication Date: 2001-10
ISBN / ASIN: 0028642333, 66685 KB

It may surprise readers to discover that Islam is the fastest-growing religion in the world, according to The Complete Idiot's Guide to Islam. "However, even more eye-opening is the fact that Islam is the fastest growing religion in North America," writes author Yahiya Emerick (How to Tell Others About Islam).

Paradoxically, Islam is also one of the most misunderstood and maligned religions in North America. Fortunately, Emerick has written a viable antidote to the widespread confusion and ignorance. Using the Idiot's Guide's formula of questions and answers, sidebars, and small, easy-to-digest essays, Emerick makes Islam accessible to anyone who is inclined to learn more about this influential religion.

Readers have much to glean from this comprehensive and balanced guidebook--primarily that Islam is a prayerful, peace-loving religion that has been misused in the name of terror, just as Hitler and other extremists have misused Christianity throughout history. Emerick devotes an entire section to "Looking at Women in Islam," in which readers can sort through even more misconceptions. The Idiot's Guide title belies the integrity of the book, which is an important contribution for our times. --Gail Hudson

Book Description:
An up-close and up-to-date look at an often misunderstood faith.
This completely revised and updated guide explores the tenets of the Qu'ran (a.k.a. Koran), examines the history of the religion and its relationship to Christianity and Judaism, and features an expanded section on the true story behind “jihad.” It explores Islamic views on war and terrorism, including the Muslim perspective on the tragic events of September 11, and the subsequent U.S. presence in both Afghanistan and Iraq.

• Excellent sales for the first edition
• Islam is the fastest growing religion in America, with more than six million devoted followers
• Features an expanded section on women in Islam, including their status within the Taliban, and the Islamic practice of polygamy

Description: This work of research by Taj Hashmi puts the issue of women's position in society in historical as well as Islamic perspectives to relate it to the objective conditions in Bangladesh. In eight chapters, he narrates how Quranic edicts about women have through the ages been misinterpreted by the power elites and the "mullahs" to suppress women.

Even NGOs are not immune from exploiting them. Hope, according to the author, lies in the literacy and economic self reliance of the Bangladeshi women.

PDF : The Future of Political Islam

By Graham E. Fuller
Publisher: Palgrave Macmillan
Pages: 272, Publication Date: 2003-04-19
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1403961360, PDF | 272 pages | 1.2 MB

Description: September 11; vitriolic rhetoric against the United States by prominent Muslims; the war against terrorism shifts from Afghanistan to the Philippines and Indonesia. It is easy to believe Islam and Muslims are enemies of the West; it is also wrong. This sweeping survey of trends in the Muslim world contends that the issue is not whether Islam plays a central role in politics, but what Muslims want.

To focus on radicalism and extremism blinds us from another trend: liberal political Islam.Proponents of liberal political Islam emphasize human rights and democracy, tolerance and cooperation. They face an uphill struggle as authoritarian regimes oppress opposition and use Islam to justify their undemocratic rule.

As people are denied avenues to participate and criticize, as secular ideologies have failed, religion has come to play a central role in politics. The outcome of the struggle between extremists and liberals will determine the future of political Islam.

The Heart of Islam: Enduring Values for Humanity

By Seyyed Hossein Nasr
Publisher: HarperOne
Pages: 352, Publication Date: 2002-09-01
RARed PDF, single vector pdf, 1.908 MB

Description: As the specter of religious extremism has become a fact of life today, the temptation is great to allow the evil actions and perspectives of a minority to represent an entire tradition. In the case of Islam, there has been much recent confusion in the Western world centered on distorted portrayals of its core values. Born of ignorance, such confusion feeds the very problem at hand.

In The Heart of Islam one of the great intellectual figures in Islamic history offers a timely presentation of the core spiritual and social values of Islam: peace, compassion, social justice, and respect for the other.

Seizing this unique moment in history to reflect on the essence of his tradition, Seyyed Hossein Nasr seeks to "open a spiritual and intellectual space for mutual understanding." Exploring Islamic values in scripture, traditional sources, and history, he also shows their clear counterparts in the Jewish and Christian traditions, revealing the common ground of the Abrahamic faiths.

Nasr challenges members of the world's civilizations to stop demonizing others while identifying themselves with pure goodness and to turn instead to a deeper understanding of those shared values that can solve the acute problems facing humanity today. "Muslims must ask themselves what went wrong within their own societies," he writes, "but the West must also pose the same question about itself . . . whether we are Muslims, Jews, Christians, or even secularists, whether we live in the Islamic world or in the West, we are in need of meaning in our lives, of ethical norms to guide our actions, of a vision that would allow us to live at peace with each other and with the rest of God's creation." Such help, he believes, lies at the heart of every religion and can lead the followers of the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) as well as other religious and spiritual traditions to a new future of mutual respect and common global purpose.

The Heart of Islam is a landmark presentation of enduring value that offers hope to humanity, and a compelling portrait of the beauty and appeal of the faith of 1.2 billion people.

Arabic Verbs and Essential Grammar

By John Mace

Publisher: NTC/Contemporary Publishing Company
Pages: 276, Publication Date: 1999-12
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0844226858
pdf scan, no ocr, 4.59MB, credit to "MasteringArabic"

Description: A reference to over 1000 Arabic verbs, this work also provides associated essential grammar. It should be suitable for all levels of students of modern standard Arabic once they have mastered the alphabet and basic grammar.

this book is essentially a summary of arabic grammar, with particular attention paid to verbs but lots of detail on other subjects as well. time and again i've consulted this book, as it contains concise and thorough descriptions of most aspects of arabic grammar. its focus is completely on *modern* standard arabic and as such it contains clear descriptions of modern usages (including things such as "short" vs. "full" pronunciation, colloquial numerals and other important subjects that don't appear in most other grammar summaries [e.g. "A New Arabic Grammar", Haywood/Nahmad]), and carefully distinguishes usages that are technically part of the language but in fact obsolete or rarely used today. even the verb tables that fill much of the book are interesting because
[among other things] the author chooses the most useful verbs and roots to exemplify the various possible types and includes lists of all the other common verbs, nouns, etc. made from the same root. my biggest complaint has to do with what's omitted. in particular, the "verb-based" focus means that the usage of verbs gets complete coverage, but other topics are skimped on. there is a real need for a concise but *complete* summary of the grammar of the *modern* literary language. another complaint is with the coverage of pronunciation -- there is a lot of good info on "full" vs. "short" pronunciation and on other topics [e.g. i didn't know that form VII and VIII verbs are never stressed on the first syllable in literary], but it's scattered throughout. it needs to be gathered together and augmented with the "informal" pronunciation [no case endings before pronoun suffixes, -ak/ik/uh instead of -ka/ki/hu, etc.], which this book denies even exists, but which must exist since it appears in "teach yourself arabic" and other places.

ISBN-10 / ASIN: 9657397065

Description:
The Olive Tree Dictionary translates from Arabic to English and contains an English Arabic Index. The Dictionary contains 784 pages 9,000 entries, 17,000 phrases and an index of 14,000 English words. The Olive Tree Dictionary helps English speakers to unlock the beauty and mystery of the Arabic language.

Until the creation of this unique publication, the challenge of mastering Arabic script has prevented many from communicating with native Arabic speakers. Utilizing an inimitable and innovative method, Arabic words are organized phonetically according to their English verbalizations.

Whether your purpose is work or leisure, all entries in the dictionary are fully transliterated and easy-to-read and to use. Each item contains a modern up-to-date translation that includes at least one sentence demonstrating its correct pronunciation and usage.

The author, J. Elihay, has published numerous works and helped thousands of non-Arabs learn and actually speak colloquial Arabic. Although the dictionary focuses on Eastern Arabic dialects, (Jordanian, Syrian, Lebanese, and Palestinian Arabic) it is a relevant and valuable work for all those interested in learning Arabic.

The dictionary s emblem, the Levant and the Olive Tree, signifies peace. In some small measure, the Olive Tree Dictionary contributes towards bridging the gap of understanding between English and Arabic speakers.
